Out Under the Big Blue Sky

    Out Under the Big Blue Sky made its theatrical debut on May 6th, 7th and 8th at The Crystal Theatre in Missoula, Montana. The debut run was wildly successful with two sold out houses. Out will have an encore performance in Helena, Montana at The Myrna Loy Theatre during Montana Gay Pride Weekend. Director's Notes

    Documentary theatre is a form that continues to develop in the theatrical world, and has intrigued me since I worked on The Laramie Project two years ago. I am indebted to such artists as Moises Kaufman and the Tectonic Theatre Project, Anna Deveare-Smith, and Emily Mann, all of whom have contributed significant works in this area, and have paved the way for this play.

    Although portions of Out Under the Big Blue Sky have been fictionalized, the people who's stories you are about to see and hear are real. In the end, I did very little to change or event adapt what they told me in the interviews I conducted last fall; the stories speak for themselves. I dedicate this performance to them, for being courageous enough to live their lives in a state as wild and beautiful and, at times, as dangerous as this one, and for having the courage to let their stories be told. Their bravery is an inspiration.

    I would also like to thank the actors, stage manager, my producer, and designers for coming with me on this journey, which signals an end to my work in Montana (for the time being; as Susan says, "I will come back."). They are an amazing powerful group of people, as you will see for yourselves.
Thank you, Montana. I'll miss you.

    Laramie Dean is a native Montanan who grew up in a small town in northeastern Montana. He has lived in Missoula for 10 years, and is currently finishing his Masters in Theatre. Missoulians have seen Dean most recently in the role of Lumiere in MCT's Disney's Beauty and the Best, and as Riff Raff in The University of Montana's production of The Rocky Horror Show. Dean will be attending Southern Illinois University in the fall to earn his PhD in Playwriting. Out Under the Big Blue Sky is Dean's second full-length play to be produced.
